2025 Italy - December - Day 03 - Goodbye Venice, Hello Florence!

 December 4, 2025

We are off to Florence this morning.  I am writing this on a ITALO high speed train heading to Florence where we will stay one night.  I went to bed at 8:00 PM and fell asleep fast and hard.  Unfortunately, I woke up at 12:45 AM and tossed and turned the rest of the night until I got up at 5:30 AM to shower and get ready to leave.  We caught a Water Ferry at 7 AM at CA ‘D ORO dock that took us to the train terminal for our 8:05 AM departure.  The trip is supposed to take 2 hours and 20 minutes.  We shall see.  I guess getting up so early was a good thing as I received an email from the Stake President saying that they had not passed along a temple cleaning assignment and asked us to try and find 3 active temple recommend holders to work tomorrow night at 9:30 PM.  I passed the assignment on to one of my counselors and then sent a GroupMe message out asking for volunteers to support this.  We shall see how it goes.  Anyway, being up at 3 AM I was able to try and get something going on this.

One thing that I did not write about that I’ll take a minute to document was a man on our flight from EWR to VCE.  He sat 2 rows ahead of me, 1 row ahead of Jeff.  The moment this man’s bum hit his chair, he was asleep.  And for 7.5 hours he snored so loud that roosters seemed quiet.  He definitely had a sleep problem.  He was a big man and as he slept his head would bob all around.  At points, he was sliding out of his chair with his arms and head in the aisle way.  He’s wake up, adjust and immediately began to snore loudly again.  I kid you not, this went on for 7.5 hours.  I’m so glad that Jeff and I had ear plugs.  The man sitting next to him HAD to be his friend.  But nonetheless, he still had to be miserable.  I wish I could have taken a picture at times to have documented it.  As I said, I’ve never seen anything like that.  People all around him were in shock at what they were seeing too.  I wanted to offer him my CPAP machine to see if that could help!!!  ðŸ˜œ  Oh well, we all survived and I hope he gets that dealt with!

Venice…I like Venice.  But two nights here is plenty.  We packed in a lot in the day time hours seeing things.  The whole Christmas market idea was a bust…no Christmas markets that I saw.  Just lots of little trinket shops that Michelle and Denise could not refrain from.  Burano, in my opinion, was kind of the highlight.  Colorful small town with nice shops and things to enjoy.  Now on to Florence for a quick visit before heading to Pisa and then to Rome tomorrow.

We arrived in Florence at the exact time told to us…10:20.  It was a 10 minute walk to our ‘hotel’ down a very busy street.  The host checked us in and told us to come back at 2 PM and the rooms would be ready.  So off we went to discover Florence.  It is a much more bustling town than Venice.  The streets are jammed with people and cars.  We decided to first go to the museum where Michelangelo’s David is found.  After waiting in the non-reservation line for about 30 minutes, we got in.  The museum was ok.  But the statue of David is amazing.  They say they don’t know if it was David before or after the battle with Goliath.  My question is, ‘Whas he naked when the fight occurred?  ‘Cause…he’s surely naked here.’.  Anyway, we spent an hour or so walking around the museum.

We left the museum and headed to the Duomo Piazza.  Wow, that’s a building and cathedral.  It is huge.  We just did the free entrance thing even though Denise kept saying she wanted to pay some money and go up the bell tower.  Honestly, if she had, she’d still be climbing as it is 422 stairs straight up.  That makes me sweat just thinking about it even though it is a cool day here.  The Duomo is pretty on the outside more than on the inside.  However, the dome on the inside is amazingly painted and quite striking.

After our duomo visit, we needed food.  We decided to adventure back to the hotel looking for food along the way.  We came to a plaza and found a food truck that made Smash Burgers and large Tacos.  The young man working it was from Egypt and had only been here in Italy for 2 years.  Nice kid.  The large taco was like a burrito with chicken, French fries and other stuff in it.  It was pretty tasty.  I am now in my room resting until we go out to do an evening walkabout (my feet scream out as I think about it).  Denise wants to go to a Christmas market some 20 minute walk away.  I think it will be nice to see the Christmas lights here along the way.

We caught a quick 45  minute nap/rest and then headed out on a walk to a Christmas market.  As we walked, the sun set and it became dark.  But the streets are lit up so well with lights and many Christmas lights.  There are many large churches in downtown Firenze making it seem really impressive.  The Christmas market was nice…lots of food options.  It was located on the piazza of Santa Croce (Jim Croce’s saint cousin!  ðŸ˜‰)  None of us were hungry though.  But Jeff and Michelle did get some yummy Churros with chocolate and we bought something from Hungary called Kurtos.  It is a spiral bread cooked over coals that is then rolled in whatever you like.  We did cinnamon and sugar.  They then put Nutella throughout the middle of it.  It was amazing.  Anyway, the girls suitcases are filling up quickly.  Michelle is thinking about buying another one to check home.  Not sure if she is teasing or for real.

I want to come back to Florence!  It has been amazing and we are only giving it 22 hours including sleep and rest time.  I want to be here to try the really good Italian food.  But I won’t this time.  I’ll have to come back!

Lots of  pictures from today:

Us at Venice train station waiting for the platform to post for our train.

Our hotel is found on this narrow street I believe.

An offering tree in the Duomo Cathedral in Florence.

Some pictures of David {and another statue}.

The hall of statues leading up to David.

Our line that we waited in to get tickets to go into this ‘David’ museum.

All 5 of us finally together.  One forgot clothes.

Denise and her street ‘smash burger’.

My friend from Egypt in his street food stand.  He made some good food.  Smash Burgers could learn from him.

422 steps up this bell tower.  Guess how many down?  Yep, you got it…422 otherwise it would be the leaning  bell tower that we’ll see tomorrow.

Us on the outside of the Duomo.

The piazza where the Duomo is found.

Mary Poppins feeding the birds.   Pigeons are everywhere.  We try to wear hats having been taught a lesson by Denise on Venice San Marcos square.

Checking out a street bizarre.

Our nice room in Florence.

Some stained glass in the cathedral Duomo.

The painting in the dome of the cathedral.   Pretty impressive.

The front entrance to the Duomo Cathedral.

The three of them.

Getting on our high speed train to Florence from Venice.

A wall of chocolate!  Yum!

One of the Christmas lit streets in the town center.  A lot of the streets have Christmas lights over them.

This is actually a museum.  They have museums on every corner here in the old part of town.

Not sure why…but this was a display of many statues.  It looked cool.

This was the only fountain that we saw that had water flowing from it.  Getting us ready for Trevi Fountain in Rome tomorrow night!

The Christmas market.  I wouldn’t say it was magical.  But it was interesting.  Good food options there.

Lots of piazzas with open air restaurants.  So much food around.

I took this picture to show the two leather shops.  This does not begin to demonstrate the number of leather shops in this town.  Holy smokes…on every corner.

49er fans all around the world!

Abusing Santa Claus.  What shoppers will do to get a good deal.

We stopped these 3 military guys.  They looked sharp in their uniforms.

The moon rising over the Duomo Cathedral.

This is what a Kurtos looks like.  The bread is swirly and comes a part easily so you can break parts of it off.  So tasty it was.

These are the folks making the Kurtos.  Line was long at this one.

More nice Christmas lights on one of the main streets down town.

This is inside the museum whose outside photo I shared above.  Pretty nice inside!

2025 Italy - December - Day Two - Hello Murano, Burano and Lido

 December 3, 2025

It’s hard to believe that we slept and woke up in Venice today.  The world is a small place with planes, trains and automobiles.  Yes, we had a long layover in EWR.  But if you think about it, our actual travel time of some 12 hours to go all the way from SLC to VCE (Venice) is quite amazing.

I personally woke up around 4 AM today.  Not sure why.  I think subconsciously that I was thinking about sleeping by ‘poopy hair’ and didn’t want to get any on me!  Nah…just kidding.  I was up til 11 writing the blog post.  But I slept hard until 4 AM then turned to my side of bed to research the water boats as I knew everyone wanted to go see glass blowing on the island of Murano.  A single ticket for 70 minutes of water taxi riding costs €9.50.  But for €25 you get a 24 hour pass and you can use any public mode of transportation where ACTV Venice operates.  So we ended up riding the water buses to 3 islands and back to Venice.  We also used a bus on the island of Lido to get back to the ferry dock from the beaches that we walked to.  Pretty good deal.

We were up going around 10 AM.  I did fall back to sleep for a few hours probably around 6 AM.  That was good.  Our first journey was to the island of Murano where glass blowing is done.  All the islands around here have glass pieces that were hand made on this island.  We watched a guy make a drinking glass and then a horse.  For the horse, once the glass is hot, he only has 1.5 minutes to make the figure.  He can’t re-heat it.  So he has to move quickly.  He was amazing to watch as he pulled and touched until the horse was complete.   They had a gallery of some amazing work done at this particular shop.  Very expensive but beautiful stuff.  Denise bought some of Murano glass on the next island we went to.  Murano was a fast stop.

Next island was Burano.  This was not on our radar when we set out in the morning.  But doing some research while traveling, Burano and its beautifully colored homes were highly recommended.  And this small island did not disappoint.  Fun little shops, differing colored homes and small canals all around us.  We really enjoyed the time spent in Burano.  I even found a sandwich that was really good and only cost €2 which made the sandwich taste even better.

After Burano, we took a ferry ride for nearly an hour to get to Lido.  12+ years ago, with Dale and Julee, my in-laws, we stayed on the island of Lido.  I remembered taking Julee to the beaches there and her just loving to walk the beach searching for the best sea shells.  Nothing has changed here relative to the beach…tons of shells everywhere.  I think Michelle gathered up enough for all of us.  It was a bit of a walk to get to the beach from the boat dock.  So we ended up using our day pass to ride the bus back to the dock where we caught the Line 1 bus back to Venice.  And instead of getting off the water taxi at our stop, we carried on to the train station to check out how long it is going to take tomorrow morning to get there.  I think we can catch the 7:08 AM ferry and that will give us enough time to catch the 8:05 train to Firenze (Florence).   Before we headed home from the train station, we found a place to eat…yes…Italian food.  It was not as good as last nights dinner.  It was just ok.

I think I mentioned that I forgot a belt on this journey and I was going to make that be my first order of business once here in Venice.  But Jeff had a belt that fit me.  So I used that yesterday.  But a fellow from Africa stopped us in a square and put bracelets on Denise and Michelle.  Obviously he was only going to take money back.  He also showed us a belt that he ‘wanted’ to give us which I said keep it.  Anyway, I left and started walking.  But apparently when Denise went to give him some money for the bracelets to get him off her back, he saw that she had €20.  He grabbed it and threw the belt at her and then took of running away.  Soooo…I now have a new belt.  All good.  I probably would have paid that much for a belt anyway.

More pictures:

These are some photos of the nice flat we are in.  It has been a wonderful stay.

This is a private water taxi.   You see lots of these running around.  They are not the public water ferries that we used all day today.

Big clusters of sea shells over on Lido.

Us on one of the beaches in Lido.

Christmas tree on San Marcos square.  We looked hard for the bird that pooped on Denise!

Mary Poppins feeding the pigeons as he waited in Burano.  It was fun watching the bird WWE match over a small bread crumb.

One of the many bridges over canals in Burano.

My 2 euro sandwich in Burano.  It was a salami sandwich and it was really quite good!

Denise’s home…her yellow house!

Two happy scarf buyers.  It was cold and the scarfs made a big difference.  Bargain buy it was.

A row of the colorful homes in Burano.  They must have some ordinance dictating what color your home has to be!

We are in the glass gallery on the island of Murano where a sign is posted not take photographs.  I wonder who disobeyed that one!

Our glass blowing master!  In the fist picture, you can see the horse that he shaped in less than 1.5 minutes.

My favorite souvenir shop…a closed one!  ðŸ™Š

A better picture of Denise at her favorite house.

All colored houses in a row.  Looks pretty cool.

Smallest hot chocolate we’ve ever bought.  But is as pretty darn good.

Denise and Michelle on the water ferry.

A panoramic picture of the beach that we were on in Lido.

Fun day!
