Our room came with breakfast which was quite yummy. I had the English breakfast of a potato wedge, fried tomato, fried mushrooms, baked beans, slice of ham, sausage and some toast. Quite a bit. Denise had that dish that has poached eggs on English toast with the creamy sauce...eggs Benedict. I remember the name of it. All was quite good.
After breakfast, we got back in the car to take one of our most enduring trips. I think we were in the car for 6 hours on roads making Highway 1 in California seem straight. Fortunately, the coast and country side was quite beautiful. It was cool and nice. So we made it through. The South Wales coast line is rated quite highly among travel magazines. You get some nice beaches, rugged coast, green fertile farms and then in the north you get into a National Park that has beautiful mountains. So you get to experience white a bit. But...the driving was crazy. I have never gone so fast, at times, so slow at times on such narrow roads. I think back and wonder what the road architects were thinking. Can't they make a straight road? Holy smokes!
We drove to the south western tip of Wales (St. David). We then travelled north up to Aberystwyth and then up through the Snowdonia National Forrest and into the Liverpool area. We did stop once in Aberaeron, a little coastal town that had lots of nice shops. Denise bought some Welsh spoons take home.
Coming into the Liverpool area, we were running behind schedule, so we thought we would quickly go to 'Penny Lane' to see where Paul McCartney was born and lived. However, we arrived at rush hour time and frankly the traffic was as bad as I've been in. The GPS kept trying to re-route. And at one point, it kept trying to route us over a bridge that was not even functioning. We finally turned the car GPS off and went with our phone. It seemed to know better on what to avoid. We finally found Penny Lane and got some pictures. But right there on the street, Denise could not last any longer and she christened the street with both car doors open. Thank goodness for running water in the gutter.
We finally found our condo at about 7 PM. It was a bit tricky. But it is a very nice place in an older area right by one of the city trams. If we were staying longer, it would probably be a nice place to jump off from to see the city. Once we knew were the condo was at, he headed to a store to get something to eat for dinner and breakfast tomorrow. While picking out some things, Denise struck up a conversation with a store clerk about seeing Beatle's things. The lady said, why don't you ask the guy behind her. She turned around and it was a guy who worked for the very Beatle's tour we were interested in taking. Unfortunately, they were done for the day and we won't have time tomorrow as we are meeting friends at the Preston LDS Temple at noon tomorrow. The tour is 3 hours long. Maybe another time I guess.
Well...another day in the books. Too much driving this day. Yesterday, Denise was the crabby one. Today...I took the award. All the white knuckle driving took a toll on me a bit. Denise keeps reminding me that we've done such trips in the past. Somehow I don't recall such a trip as this one this day. It was like driving Highway 1 for 6 hours with a small village every 1 mile....I swear!
The driving should start to mellow a bit now as we head further north toward Scotland. Looking forward to that. Last little story before I stop. The place here in Liverpool has a washing machine. So we thought we'd do some wash! We bought soap at the store. We fired up the washer. It ran and ran and ran. I swear it was never going to stop! Finally we just turned it off and ran a spin cycle only. It ran and ran. Finally we just turned it off. We then tried to open the darn door to get the clothes out. It would not unlock. We tried and tried and tried. After getting pretty frustrated, I looked on top of the machine where the 'fine print' said...after 2 minutes the doors will open due to a 'child lock' feature. Well...it worked on this child. After waiting two minutes, it opened like designed. Dumb Americans! :-)
Pictures....
Part of the frustration today was the high hedges. There was beautiful coastal scenery, but you could not see it. Pretty frustrating...
A nice beach\cove where people were setting up for the day. People were already surfing...
Camp sites every where. Europe is still on holiday so lots of campers and vans on the roads and people in camp sites....
Great example of the narrow streets you were on in each village each 1 kilometer!
Fishing village...
This is in the town of Abreraeron where we stopped for some souvenirs...
...and while she shopped, I worked on my selfies. I won't show you the mis-tries! It's not my forte....
Sheep roaming the hillsides everywhere...
Another village....I'd like to I know how many we went through!
Crazy nice town clock....
Snowdonia...going through the mountains in this National Park....
More sheep...you'd think we'd be having lamb chops for dinner each night!!!
