2019 Mexico City - Day 01 - Travel Day, Bienvenidos Mexico City

September 18, 2019

Bienvenidos a Mexico!  We arrived to Mexico City being welcomed by open arms from Neza's parents, Blanca and Juan.  It was a delight to watch this great reunion and to see Grandma Blanca's happiness to see her grand children, in person, for the first time.  I wish Lorenzo and Atticus would have welcomed her the same.  But they were tired and cranky and just wanted to be with their parents.  Anyway...highlight of the day!

Our flight down to Mexico took us to SFO first.  Due to runway work, our flight was delayed one hour.  Normally, this would have been a bad thing.  The gate agent who checked Karlie in even offered to re-route them through Houston.  But I told her not to do that since the plane we were on going to SFO was the same plane that would take us to Mexico City.  In the end, we only arrived 15 minutes late to SFO.  And they turned that plane around amazingly fast.  We only arrived 10 minutes late to Mexico City.  And the best news was that Denise and I each had our own row...both emergency exit rows across from each other.  Karlie, Neza and the kids eventually came up and sat by us since the row in front of Denise did not have passengers.  So it turned out pretty well.  The boys travelled pretty good.  They liked walking around the plane when it was not turbulent and the seat belt sign was off.

Flying into Mexico City was a bit bumpy.  It rained pretty hard, especially when we got into Juan and Blanca's van. Yes...all 6 adults, two kids and all of our luggage, car seat and stroller somehow packed into their van!  I still don't know how we did it.  The first stop was our AIRBNB.  It took a bit of winding through very narrow and busy road ways...but we found it.  The hosts were waiting for us. They are so kind and seemed really excited to have us here.  Like I said, it was really raining quite hard. I was afraid Denise was going to melt.

After we got our stuff dropped and updated on the room by Jorge and his wife, we waited a bit for Juan to return from getting gas so we could go find some food.  It was about 9 PM by then and still raining pretty good.  We all piled back into the van and literally drove around the corner to a Taco Stand that had a small covering.  Many people were already eating there.  We bombarded them when we all unpiled from the van.  They were all very kind though.  I heard Neza tell the young man making the tacos that he wanted it to be like a buffet...just keep the tacos coming.  I think I ate 4 Tacos.  I don't know how many we all ate in total...but it only cost us $12 to feed all 8 of us!  The stand had many different types of taco fillings.  One was liver and vegetables.  Safe to say...no one tried that one.  But all the others were so darn good.  Since it is close...we might be returning!

After eating tacos, we walked, in the rain, about 50 yards down the street to a tienda to buy some things for breakfast in the morning.  It was a very nice store and it was easy to find things.  We bought juice, many pastries (of course), water and so on.  Cost me 80 pesos...which is around $5.  Not too bad for all that we bought.

Our apartment is clean and nice.  The bed, however, is pretty small.  It was a tug of war during the night between Denise and I.  Not sure who won.  But I'm up and writing...so maybe I did.

Looking forward to a great experience here in Mexico!
