2023 England - September - Day 01 - Isle of Wight (Sandown) Travel

On Saturday, September 2nd, we worked in the temple until around 4:30 PM.  We then returned to our flat to gather our suitcases and load them into our friends car (Pat and Lisa Wallace) to head out on a 10+ day trip to visit the Isle of Wight, Jurassic Coast, Cornwall, Bath, and Wales.  The temple is closing for 9 weeks and we get to travel for the first 2 weeks.  The other 7 weeks we will try to use our time to find service projects and work within our Ward helping the Bishop with whatever we can.

Our departure from the temple was stressful as we had to drive 1.5 hours to Portsmouth to get us on a ferry to go over to Isle of Wight.  We had to be there between 7 and 7:30 PM.  So it was going to be close.  In the end, we arrived around 6:50 PM and waited a bit to get on the ferry.

The ride across the water took about 45 minutes and it was fun to see the Portsmouth harbor.  It is a beautiful harbor.  There was one of the UK’s 2 aircraft carriers in port there.  I think cruise ships also disembark here.  We enjoyed walking around the ferry as it cruised across the water.

Our journey to our BnB took about 30 minutes.  The BnB was easy to find (White Cliff).  It was a really old building that had a number of rooms up 3 flights of stairs.  The owner\host (Julie) was there to greet us and welcomed us into her BnB.  She shared lots of info including where to get some food as we were quite hungry as we did not eat dinner after our shift in the temple.  We were pressed to get to the ferry.  Anyway, we took our stuff to our rooms and then we headed down to the ‘High’ street….the Main Street of Sandown, where we were staying.  We also went down to the beach to check it out.  It was already dark so not a whole lot to see.  We ended up in a Chinese restaurant.  The food was good and we complimented the owner.  He, in turn, kept inviting us to come back tomorrow to eat there again.  That made us smile.

After eating we returned to our rooms.  The rooms were nice but a bit old as you can imagine.  They were also a bit warm.  But each room had a fan which helped to get the rooms cooled down quickly.  We went to bed excited about our planned trip.
