2019 Europe w/Wayments - Day 13 - Les Miserables, Travel Home.

April 10, 2019

I have been flying now for about 3 hours in a 10 hour flight.  It has all gone pretty well.  Yesterday was interesting in that my plan to cheaply stay out by Heathrow in a cheaper AIRBNB (versus downtown in an expensive hotel) kind of back.fired on us.  As it turned out, the cost to get from Heathrow, Terminal 4, was 28 pounds.  I thought it would be only 10 or 12 pounds.  Huge difference.  The funny thing tough, going back to the Terminal from our apartment to go back into London only cost 10 pounds.  So I guess coming off the airport costs much more than going to the airport and I believe that Terminal 4 was further from our flat than Terminal 5 was.

We arrived at the flat around 2 PMsh.  It was really nice.  Very clean with two very small bedrooms.   It was raining a bit when we arrived and the flat was quite cool, so we had to figure out how to get the heat on.  Those type of things are always a challenge to me.  But in the end, Kim and I figured it all out and got some heat going.  We kind of just relaxed until about 4 PM or so and then we headed back to Heathrow to catch the Piccadilly Line again only we got off at Piccadilly Circus.  both Ilene and Denise wanted to shop a bit and we were all quite hungry.  The ride back in was.a good 50 minutes....kind of long.

The first order of business was to locate the Queens Theater that houses the production of Les Miserables.  It did not take long to get a visual on it.  The West End of London has tons of theaters.  And Piccadilly Circus kind of felt like Times Square in NY...but not quite as big..  Once we had the visual on the theater, food was the next order of business.  We saw a small tavern (St. James Tavern) and thought that it would be nice to do pub food one more time.  So in we went.  It was pretty crowded.  But one of the Bar Tenders waved us in and took us into a closet like area where a table for 4 was set.  It had a reserved sign on it but he smiled and said it was reserved for us.  :-)  It was a nice meal in a secluded place in a very busy Tavern.

After eating, Ilene really wanted to find a light coat to take back.  We walked around a bit as we had an hour before the play was to start.  We went into some ‘outdoors’ like store and there she found a very nice coat that seemed to be goodly priced. So she bought it. We all thought it looked very nice on her.

After the grand purchase, we headed towards the theater but looking for some souvenir stores.  We came upon a little market that had some trinkets.  Denise wanted some salt and pepper shakers from London.  And Ilene did too.  This little store actually had some...for 4.99 pounds per set.  Both Ilene and Denise bought a set of different types and plan to swap one piece from each to get 1 piece from each set.  So genius that’s are.  :-)  That, my friends, was the last purchase as far as I know of things to take home.

Now the play....Les Miserables.  I think my nose is still bleeding from being high up.  The theater was actually quite small and the view downward was really steep.  I think we saw the tops of the actors heads.  Funny, Cossette as it turns out, was actually African American.  We had no idea until after the play that this was the case.  Although we paid a pretty good price for our tickets, the Playbills still had to  be purchased....4 pounds.  We passed on that.  now the good parts.   Oh my gosh, what a nice production of Les Miserables.  The scenery was amazing with a circulating stage.  The men playing Jean Valjean and Javert had voices like no others.  Boy could they sing.  And when ‘Bring Him Home’ was sung, it kind of brought tears to my eyes.  So pretty..  The women’s voices were great too.  But I think the men were better this time around.  It was an amazing 3 hours of theater.

After the play, it was decision time to either hail an Uber  or take the Piccadilly line back to Heathrow and hail an Uber from there.  In the end, we chose to pay a bit more and to get home more quickly.  It probably would have cost us around 40 pounds using the subway and Uber.  We paid 55 pounds to be driven to our flat.  The good news was that we were there in roughly 40 minutes.  We arrived around 11:30 PM.  I don’t think we would have been back until 12:30 AM or later if we had taken the subway.

Upon arriving, we all quickly packed what we could for our travels the next morning.  I think I was asleep by 12_30 ish...maybe sooner.  But I was wide awake around 4:30 AM.  I finally got up and showered around 5:15 AM.  At about 6:15 AM, we hailed our last Uber to take us to Terminal 3 where American Airlines flys out of.  The process of getting through security went fairly well.  Kim, again, got strip searched.  Well, not quite that bad.  He makes close friends at every airport he goes through because of his medical devices and so on.  One funny thing was when Kim tried to use his boarding pass (electronic) going through the turnstil prior to security.  Ilene, Denise and I had already gone through but Kim’s would not take.  Come to find out later, Ilene had gone through using Kim’s bar code and the system knew it had been used.  The lady figured it out and let him by.  We all gave Ilene a ration of jokes about that.  After clearing security, we headed to the lounge that our credit cards allow.   Once in, we had a really nice breakfast and just relaxed until it was time to go too the gate.  At the gate, I wanted to see if Denise and I could be sat together.  The Gate Agent was really nice and said the best that she could do was put me in the middle aisle close to where Denise was to sit.  I then thought I could ask the person sitting next to her if we could trade, which I eventually did.  But ... she first said no.  She did not want to sit next to the man who was sitting next to me.  In the end, she found another seat and moved to it.  So Denise and I are sitting together on this 10 hour flight to Phoenix.

At Phoenix, we went to board our flight and the Gate Agent had Denise put her bag in the bag sizer.  I was amazed.  We’ve traveled all over the world and her bag has never been checked.  Well, her bag fit in just fine, yet the agent still forced her to check it.  Everyone around us was amazed.  I was ticked.  So many bags had gone on that were much bigger than Denise’s.  Yet they singled her out.  Pretty odd.  I found some of the actions by American Airline employees a bit odd.

Our trip has concluded.  We really miss our family and home.  But it is always fun to go to other parts of this beautiful world and feel of the different customs and such there.   We are all just doing our best living our lives where ever we have been placed.  And in general, the majority of the people are kind and helping as they just live their lives.

England(London), Germany (Berlin, Bremen), Netherlands(Muiden, Amsterdam), Belgium(Brussels, Ghent, Bruges) and for a quick moment, France(Dunkirk).  We flew planes, we took multitudes of trains including one that went under the English Channel.  We took water boat tours, did the London Eye, road bikes through tulip fields and Holland villages.  We experienced WWII via Berlin and other places.  We saw amazing architecture both very old and very new.  We saw old Cathedrals, Forts and very old Castles.  We saw the ocean (Dover and Dunkirk).  And, we found Doner’s...a crazy good sandwich in Germany1. I’m sure I left out much.  But I will not leave out the best memory of all, that we were able to travel VERY well with our very dear friends, Kim and Ilene.  They were awesome and so fun to be with.   I hope that they might want to do it again with us someday!  So until then....another trip in the books.

2019 Europe w/Wayments - Day 12 - Brussels to London

April 9, 2019

Day 12 is here and I’m actually writing this on a train that feels like it is going backwards since I’m facing the wrong way.  We have departed for London St. Pancras\Kings Cross station.  From there we will take the Piccadilly line out to Heathrow and then an Uber to our apartment for the night.

We were all up early this morning as I wanted to be on the road by 7:30 AM to check the car in.  I had filled up the car last night and had not driven it until this morning.  We were on the road and at the train station by 8:15 AM.  The check in process was easy except that the guy charged me 48 euro extra for gas.  The darn gas gauge showed like I was an eighth down...which was not true and they charged me 12 euro per liter of gas....4 liters.  What a robbery...but what do you do.  I find these guys over here who work in these professions quite criminal.  And I think being an American has a lot to do with it frankly.  They know you can’t speak their language and kind of do what they want.

The drive into downtown Brussels will be the only time we see central Brussels.  The train station that we are going out of is not quite in the center of town but fairly close.  It has large building all around as you can imagine.  But I suspect there is an old part to it also.

Our train left at 10:56 AM.  This was the time that we also could check in to our flights tomorrow.  So both couples were scrambling to get seats quickly in hopes it made a difference on where we were placed and if we would sit together.  The good news is that Kim and Ilene got seats together going to Phoenix.  The bad news is that Denise and I did not.  Denise is really frustrated by this.  But there is nothing that I could do to fix that or control that.  But I plan to ask at the gate tomorrow to see if there is anything that can be done to get us together.  Kind of odd that one couple is together and the other not.

Tonight we will go back into London to see Les Miserables.  I don’t know if I’ll have time to blog after as we will not get back to our flat until late and will need to get ready to get up early, get to the airport and then fly home.  Crazy last two days but all worth it....it has been a great trip.

2019 Europe w/Wayments - Day 11 - Gent and Brussels

April 8, 2019

Last night was a nice night in a really nice BnB.  The farm house was comfortable and unique.  We watched both sessions of conference with the final session ending at 12 AM (midnight).  As usual, great conference.

As a result of staying up so late, we kind of got up a bit later (around 8 AM).  Our bathroom had no doors.  Tub in the middle of the room, toilet under the A-frame roof...which seriously caused peeing difficulties for me.  I could not get close enough to the toilet because my head hit the roof.  I know of my accuracy, but distance, I need to work on these days.  So sitting down for all toilet work was the order of the day.  :-)  It was kind of fun watching Denise bathe while I used the toilet.  Ok...too much information.

The order of the day was to go into Gent and see the recovered art work that the Germans had taken that the allies recovered (Monuments Men movie!).  I was a bit stressed as I knew we would be driving into an older downtown where the roads would be small and the parking scarce.  The roads were all brick\cobblestone and narrow but we came upon an underground parking garage that seemed to be close to the church that held the art.  So we went in.  That worked out great.

The first order of business was to find a cafe and get some breakfast.  Denise and Ilene were determined to find a place that served waffles.  We ended up going into a very nice restaurant on the main square by the church that held the art.  There were many large buildings\ chapels.   There was  also a high bell tower.  In the end, we paid a few euro to go in the church and see the artwork.  One piece is still missing as two pieces were stolen and the one who stole them, returned one of them.   They have no idea where the other one is.  The artwork is all about God the Father, Christ, John the Baptist, Adam, Eve and people desiring to come unto them.  The narration was quite interesting as it described some of the intent of the artist.

After seeing the art work, we toured the old church.  It was a very large and very cold chapel.  Cold meaning cold air blowing in.  Those who attend must come with their thermal underwear on!

After seeing the church, we heard there was a castle in town.  And sure enough, it was within walking distance.  So off we went.  We found it easily and took the audio tour.  It was kind of fun listening to the story of this count who created this castle and his tortures, wives and so on.  Crazy times those days were.  And to wear the medieval armor.  So heavy.  These guys must have been buff.  We spent a good 1.5 hours at the castle.   But then, we ran out of thing to do.  So back to the car to head to our BnB in Brussels...or just outside of Brussels.  In Belgium, it has been interesting getting gas into the car as many places are unattended and only have a machine.  But the darn machines won’t take my credit card.  Finally, I had Kim try his debit card and lo and behold, it worked.  Really interesting.

We tried to let the AirBnb host know that we were going to be there at around 3 PM.  As we drove they asked if we could come at 4 PM.  So we dilly dallied around by getting gas, going to a grocery store and so on.  Little did we know, we’d be walking back to that same store and eating at the restaurant in the store...which was kind of like a cafeteria.  More on that in a minute.  The owner showed up around 4:15 PM and thought we were just dumping our stuff.  We told him that we were kind of done for the day and just wanted to relax.  But he asked us if we could go get some dinner and come back as the place was a mess.  And, let me tell you, kind of interestingly laid out and old.  As we went off walking on no sidewalk streets back to the store, we were all a bit concerned how clean could they really make this place.

The cafeteria...no one speaks English much here.  So getting through a cafeteria type thing was interesting.  In the end, it turned out ok.  Denise and I shared a plate with some dessert to follow.  It was not our best meal on the trip but it filled a hole in the stomach.

Upon arriving back to the BnB, the place had been cleaned up really nice.  It is still older with crazy wood floors on level 2 and 3.  Kim and Ilene took the top floor...a mere 30 stairs to get up to their room!  They have done a lot of stairs in their stay at these places.  Us too.  Our room last night had very steep stairs but not too many.  We have probably 20 stairs to get to our room tonight and upon entering you walk through a large bathroom to get to the bed.  Really interesting.  It is going to be an interesting night.  But I think I will survive.  The hosts are really nice.  He is a Pastor trying to get a flock of followers going.  To make money, he rents this place out and runs an internet business.  They seem to be doing ok.  Anyway, tomorrow will be an early day as we have to turn the car in at the train station and then catch a train to London, then a subway out to Heathrow, an Uber to our flat.  Once we deposit our bags, we catch an Uber back to Heathrow, catch the subway to Piccadilly Square (like Times Square in NYC) to see Les Miserables.  After the play, we reverse it, subway to Heathrow and Uber to flat.  Crazy travel day.  Then Wednesday, home we go.  I think we are all ready.
