Slept horrible last night. What can I say....sleep good....sleep bad....sleep good. So tonight...sleep good! :-)
Today has been a fun day. We got going a bit earlier. Kim and I started walking over to the Train Station at 8 AM. It is about a 10 to 15 minute walk from our apartment. There we picked up a rental car and went and picked up Denise and Ilene. We were on the highway at 9 AM headed out of Berlin towards Bremen. The roads here are nice and for a big city, it was not too bad getting out of town. The freeways are really nice and the drivers are very nice. There are spots where there are no speed limits and some cars go REALLY fast in the fast lane. You have to be careful.
The drive across Germany from Berlin to Bremen was fairly flat and wooded. We did see deer and other country like animals as we drove. The interesting thing was the number of semi-trucks on these highways. Holy smokes...bumper to bumper. I hate driving with semi-trucks. So that was bothersome. But the drive turned out well.
We arrived in Bremen at 1 PM. Claudia, our host, was there waiting for us. She was so kind to us giving us a quick tour of her home. She also explained things to go and see and how to do it. She, as it turns out, is a bus driver. So she knew what buses to take. And, it worked out great. After dropping our stuff, we headed to the central part of Bremen. We ended up at the Central Train Station. Kim needed to find something quickly to eat. Heck, we were all feeling some hunger pains. Once again, we ended up in one of those Doner places where they shave the meet off the spicket. Not sure if the is spelled correctly. Anyway...it was so darn good. We have a new favorite food.
Downtown Bremen is an older part of town that has a really fun square with crazy large and really old churches. There were lots of little shops all around and so on. We were also told to go to Schooner...a quite old part of the town with really, really narrow streets. We walked all over this place until about 5 PM. We then took Claudia’s recommendation to eat on the river in a place called Luv’s. We were walking by the river when Kim said he would run up the bank and see if he could see it. All of the sudden Kim yells....it is right here! And it was. We were lucky.. The food was good...pasta, Currywurst, soup and so on. The funny part was that we ordered two large bottles of water. Each bottle cost 6.50 euro...almost 8 dollars. That’s about 5 times more than a liter of gas here! We paid $16 for water! I was amazed. What a waste of money. I can’t believe they can charge that. Live and learn.
After dinner, we used Movit to catch a bus that would drop us off by our flat. Fortunately, it dropped us by and REW (a grocery store chain in Germany) where we picked up a few things for breakfast in the morning. From there we walked about 5 minutes down streets until we came to Claudia’s flat. Now we are tucked into the flat for the evening with feet up preparing for our day heading to the Netherlands tomorrow and through the area where my Great Grandmother was born. It should be a nice experience. Until then....
