Wow…our accommodations last evening were nice. We had a nice meal before retiring to rooms. Denise and I then watched the last session of General Conference from 9 to 11 PM. Safe to say that it was tough. Fighting sleep off the whole time. But it was worth it to hear our Prophet, Russell M. Nelson, speak about the importance of temples and how the néed to be central in our worshiping and in our lives. He announced 15 new temples with one being up in Scotland. I could hear the screams of joy from all our UK friends.
Our day started off with a very nice breakfast in the hotel. It was included in the cost. They had a full continental breakfast plus you could order a hot item. Most of bought full english breakfasts. I even ate a bit of the blood pudding. Wasn’t so bad. But the thought kept me from eating most of it. But a full english breakfast includes pork-n-beans, pouched egg, bacon, sausage, fried tomatoes, large mushroom, potato wedge…I think that is all. It is a full meal deal! It was really good.
After breakfast, we headed to a hardware store to purchase a carabiner for the seat belt in the Nelson’s car. They have a problem with one connecting. So he’s using carabiners to connect his seat belt. Also, one of the passenger doors won’t open. He also has a plastic shield underneath the car that is flapping a bit, almost touching the car. He’s probably thinking he bought a lemon. It actually has been a good car for our friends.
Once we left the store, we headed to Colchester to see St. Bolphoy’s Priory. This was a bout a 40 minute drive to get there. The priory must have been amazing in its day. I’m always amazed that they could make such back in the 12th and 13th centuries. We were there, maybe 45 minutes max. And then we got in the cars and headed to Orford to see the castle there. I wasn’t expecting much. But boy, this castle did not disappoint. It was the tower portion of the castle that rose many floors up. It was pretty cool seeing the rooms in each floor and how the people lived. The wall around this was long gong but still was quite impressive.
We next headed to Framlingham to see the castle there. This was kinda opposite of the Orford Castle as the castle wall was still in tact but many of the internal buildings were gone. It was interesting to hear how the people lived within the town…within the castle. It kind of surprises me that within the small area was a village of upper class and mid\lower class. It would have been fascinating to have seen how they truly lived. I doubt I would have wanted to live then…just watch from the heavens.
We next hustled to Lowestoft where our hotel was. It is called the All Seasons Hotel and it sits on a bluff above the sea. Our rooms have a sea view. You can open the doors and feel the sea breeze blow in. No beach here though. It is a sheer drop down to the sea. I wish we could see whales out there migrating…that would be cool.
For dinner, we met some friends of the Nelson’s at a very nice hotel that sat on a body of water called The Broads. We will experience more of The Broad’s tomorrow as we drive to Norwich. I guess these water ways are quite large, all fresh water. The dinner was nice. I had a carvery dinner which was like Toby’s where you have 4 or 5 different meats that get carved on to your plate followed by a long list of vegetables laid out in buffet style that you can pile on to your plate. For 11 pounds, you get one pass through.
Well, I wanted to go up the coast to see a Lighthouse that I had read about. But it was a one-way 50 minute drive. But, I’m too beat. I’m getting this blog written and then going to bed. It’s been a great day. Our friends have been wonderful to travel with. I hope they all are enjoying the trip. I certainly am.
Some pictures:
I found a field of yellow flowers, stopped and had Denise stand in the middle of it. She loves yellow and these Canola fields are in full, yellow, bloom. And she makes them look even more beautiful.
