2024 England - April - Norfolk Trip - Day 03 - City of Norwich

 April 9th, 2024

We woke up today looking out over the North Sea.  It was pretty amazing see a ship or two pass by in the darkness (since I woke up at 4:30 AM).  As the sun rose, there were holes in the clouds that allowed the sun to shine through, almost like a flashlight shining down on places in the sea.  Once I was up and showered, I decided that I would head down to the cement brake wall and walk along it.  I wondered if there was any kind of a beach around here.  After finding a path down to the sea, I did walk the wall and had to dodge the waves crashing over it.  I did eventually come to a beach that went quite aways down.  I thought that I would walk it but decided it would take too long.  So I returned the way that I had come.  On the way back, however, a wave crashed over the wall and hit me.  It got me so wet…drenching my shoes and socks that I needed for the day.  I did not think that would be a big deal until it turned out to be a rainy day all day and they never dried out.  My feet were cold all day long.

After finding a small store, I bought some milk and blueberry muffins that I had for breakfast.  That was it.  We then headed out to Norwich to the BnB house that I had rented for the group.  The drive was easy although we almost were killed as I went to merge onto a dual carriage-way thinking the lane closest to me was open when one of the cars decided to change lanes and as I pulled out Dave yelled, ‘Watch Out’ or something like that.  I hit my brakes hard and the car whizzed by.  Had he not yelled, it would have been all over as cars were going 70 miles per hour.  As I drove, I could not stop thinking about that and how close we were to getting munched.

We found the BnB quite easily.  It’s a place with 6 rooms in it.  We are using 5 of them.  I guess the person that maintains the place uses one.   They are small, but adequate.  The bathrooms are quite small.  It’s going to be interesting on how that goes in the morning.

As we arrived, Anne Murray was walking up.  She is from Norwich and is serving in the temple with us.  She was going to give us a foot tour of downtown Norwich.  She did a great job.  We saw the Plantation Gardens, the Catholic Cathedral, Norwich Market, Tombland, Elm Hill, the Church of England Cathedral and a good portion of the downtown area.  We had hamburgers and fries at Captain America’s, where Anna Thackeray remembers eating while serving her mission many, many years ago here in this area.  We had walked all over town.  But coming back, it was a consensus that we should take the bus back to the flat, which we did.  It was a fairly quick ride for £2 per  person.  I wonder if a taxi might have been cheaper for all of us and faster.  But who knows.  Anyway, I will let the pictures do the talking for the things that we saw.

We arrived back at the BnB and have been fighting the internet access ever since.  I don’t know what is up with it, but it does not work well.  We are having to use hotspots to get out to the internet.  I’ve complained to the owners.  But as usual, they seem to do nothing about it.  And in this day and age…it is just wrong.  So frustrating….that nobody wanted to eat dinner because our hamburger stop at Captain A’s was around 2 PM and quite filling.

Before going to bed, most of us gathered in the kitchen area and played a card game.  Denise and I were eliminated quite quickly,  So here I am writing the blog.

Some pictures:

When traveling to Norwich, we passed by The Broads, which is a flat land area with finger lake\canals that run all over the place.  Some little villages can only be accessed by boat.  Anyway, as we drove we saw windmills that dotted the area.  Not sure why…..

You will see some nice pictures of the North Sea with the light shining through.  Pretty beautiful they are.

This was a place on the street near the All Seasons Hotel where we stayed near Lowestoft.  It looks like a place where you are on the honor system for leaving money if you choose to buy something.  I never saw anyone there.

These were the steps down to the seaboard where I went for a morning walk.  I had to walk about a quarter mile to get to these stairs from our hotel.

I believe this was in the Catholic Cathedral in Norwich.

All the cathedrals have magnificient stained glass windows.  They all are so impressive.

I believe this was in the Church of England Cathedral in Norwich.

The group at the Plantation Gardens….

Lots of beautiful flowers and plants at the Plantation Garden.  These were a few of the uniquely shaped tulips.

More of the gardens…

Anne Murray and Denise under an umbrella.  It rained on us most of the day.  And it was cold.

Captain America’s shield at the restaurant where we had a late lunch.

A flower shop at one of the booths at the Norwich Market.  This market is open most days all year round.

While at the market, I looked across the street and saw two young sisters talking to a man on the street.  I quietly approached them and flashed my missionary badge.  A big grin came across their faces and they wondered where I had gotten that.  They were surprised to see 9 temple missionaries smiling at them.

Some more stained glass in one of the cathedrals.

Denise riding the double decker bus on the 2nd floor by herself.  Not sure why she did that.  She came down half way through the journey.
